Selecting the right daycare can seem like a daunting task. Asking these questions can put your mind at ease and build trust with your provider.
There’s no shortage of excellent daycare options on Long Island. Whether you’re looking for something full-time or just for a few days a week, there are plenty of highly-rated, trustworthy places to send your little one.
No two daycares are alike though, and choosing the right one for your child can make a world of difference. When interviewing daycares, consider asking the following questions. They can help you get to know the facility before dropping your kiddo off for their first day.
Day-to-day
So, what’s a day like at any given center? Find out by asking:
- “What is your typical schedule?”
- “Do children get to play outside?”
- “Do you allow screen time?”
- “What activities do the children do?”
- “When is drop off? When is pick up?”
- “Do you ever take the children for off-campus outings? How are they kept safe?”
Staff
It’s important to know and trust the individuals watching your child. Be sure to ask:
- “What qualifications and certifications do you require of staff?”
- “Are your staff members certified in infant/child CPR?”
- “Does your staff know how to handle a choking emergency?”
- “What is the staff/child ratio?”
- “What is the turnover rate for staff?”
- “Is your staff qualified to care for children with special needs?”
Facility
Get to know the space where your child will be spending their day. Ask:
- “How often are toys and furniture cleaned/sanitized?”
- “How is the facility kept safe?” (Passcodes, locks, security cameras, etc.)
- “Do you have supplies handy or am I expected to provide them?” (Diapers, wipes, etc.)
- “Is your facility licensed?”
- “Is your facility equipped for children with special needs?”
Philosophy
Thoughts on childcare can vary widely. Ask any daycare:
- “Do you follow a specific educational philosophy or curriculum?”
- “How do you discipline children for behavioral issues?”
- “Do you support potty training?”
Meals
You’ve got a growing little one! When it comes to food, ask:
- “Do you provide meals or snacks?”
- “Are you equipped to handle food allergies?”
- “How do you store breastmilk?”
- “How do you prepare formula?”
Communication
You’ll want to be kept in the loop. Ask every center:
- “How do you keep parents updated with daily activities?”
- “Can I visit my child during the day?”
- “How are parents notified of emergencies?”
- “Do you do daily reports?”
Health
Kids get sick! Be sure to ask:
- “What’s your policy on illness? When are kids sent home, and when can they return?”
- “Do you require immunizations? Which ones?”
Logistics
Don’t forget:
- “What is your tuition rate?”
- “When do you deduct charges?” (Monthly, weekly, etc.)
- “Do you offer discounts?”
On your tour, you’ll also want to ask yourself a few questions:
- “What’s the general vibe of this facility?”
- “Do the children here seem happy and entertained?”
- “Does the staff seem attentive and caring?”
- “Are there age-appropriate activities?”
- “Will my child fit in here?”
- “Are the spaces clean and organized?”
Don’t be afraid to tour multiple facilities until you find the perfect spot for your little peanut.
